Sandra and Carolyn in the restaurant car on the train to Leipzig and Halle. The train station at Leipzig. Leipzig is in the former East Germany and is a beautiful city. Closer in the Leipziger train station. The Leipziger train station was fully renovated and beautiful. This was probably the most beautiful train station we came through. Sandra and Carolyn in the underground mall at the train station. Just like any mall you'd find here at home. Unfortunately you can't see it, but this is a commercial bathroom called Carolyn and I outside the Hotel Esprit in Halle. Carolyn getting off her feet in our room. We made it to Halle, which is a beautiful city that has not fully recovered from over 40 years of communist rule. This is a view from right outside our hotel. Many of the houses in Halle have been beautifully remodeled and renovated. Plus the street tram system is quite extensive. More nice buildings. Here we begin to see more of the old side of Halle. This building has just begun its renovation. This is the market place (Marktplatz) in Halle with their famous son, composer Friedrich Händel. More of the Halle market place. Händel's Hind End. (The picture seemed like a good one when I took it!) The cathedral in Halle and the Red Tower. The Red Tower was built as a freestanding belfrey in 1418. Apparently Halle was a major trade route hub for a very long time. The Church of Our Lady, better known as the Market Church (Marienkirche or Marktkirche) with its twin Hausmann towers. A closer view of the towers. Sandra and Carolyn are finally happy to be able to speak to someone on their terms. Rico, our waiter at an Italian restaurant, is from Italy and so they didn't need me as a translator. Unlike western Germany, most people here do not speak any English. My turn to join in the picture. Just so you know, it was quite warm out, probably mid to upper 80s (low 30s Celsius). Trying to pose like the statue.
